Photoelectric effect

This is one of the most interesting topic that will definitely draw your attention to science. In this 21st century world many day to day items you use or see are based on this topic itself such as from smoke sensor to your  garage's door that opens automatically on sensing your car.So I would start with describing what actually the topic is and want you to have a clear cut idea about this from your first reading.
When an electron tries to escape from metal surface the metal surface acquires a positive charge and in turn pulls the electron towards itself thus preventing it from escaping (due to the attractive force of the ions).A certain minimum amount of energy is required to help electron escape from the clutches of its neighbour ions(termed as Work Function). It is generally measured in electron volt and depends on the properties of metals and the nature of it's surface. The minimum energy  can  be supplied by three ways namely thermionic emission, field emission, photoelectric emission.
We are interested in knowing what is photoelectric effect ,so lets come straight to the point.Substance chiefly metals when exposed to electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays,ultraviolet rays, gamma rays, visible light even in some cases provide much needed energy to electrons to free itself from the clutch of his neighbour. Now if you are told to define it how would you define :-
The phenomenon of emission of electrons from metallic surface when illuminated by light of appropriate wavelength and frequency is known as photo electric effect.

Stay tuned to my blog because more posts on photoelectric effect will be published in a short span of time.If you have any questions feel free to hit me up .
