I personally found that this topic is very interesting and would like to share some of my knowledge on this special topic.An atom bomb is a fission bomb involving an uncontrolled chain reaction.It is a nuclear war weapon.Two pieces of fissionable material namely Uranium(U) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium or Plutonium(Pu),each of which is less than the critical size are taken and separated by a Cadmium partition.These pieces are enclosed in a very thick envelope called tamper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamper.The main purpose of tamper is to reflect the neutrons which might tend to go astray and out of the material; but it also serves the purpose of a strong container so that in the chain reaction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_chain_reaction, the temperature and pressurev may develop to a high value , and then the violent explosion may take place.
To start the explosion , the two pieces are brought together by a mechanical device i.e, one may be the target and the other may be taken as bullet.Both the pieces fit into each other and the total mass now becomes slightly more than critical , with reproduction factor just above one .A source of neutrons is placed nearby . The get in the mass and finding it critical , start their uncontrolled chain reaction .The temperature and pressure both rise tremendously in a matter of few micro seconds.The intense energy released then breaks of the tamper and a huge , violent and devastating explosion results.As a by product , high energy gamma rays are given out which are extremely injurious to human tissues , causing intense and permanent damage to the human system.One kg of Uranium gives of energy which can cause devastation equivalent to
20,000 tonnes of Dynamite(T.N.T).
In August 1946, two such bombs were dropped by the U.S.A on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,two prosperous towns of Japan .The result was the immediate and unconditional surrender of Japan in the war that was going on.This demonstrates that apure scientific investigation,under the hands of brute politicians can be so lethal.
